The fifth grade social studies curriculum, supported by Grade 5 Timelinks published by MacMillan/McGrawHill (2009) and aligned with the Massachusetts State Social Studies Frameworks, concentrates on United States history, geography, economics, and government: Early Exploration to Westward Movement.
Our studies focus on the creation of our nation through the study of:
-Major pre-Columbian civilizations
-Early exploration
-Ideas and events that led to the formation of the United States
Students will have the opportunity to:
● Understand and apply the language of maps
● Develop reading skills, including the understanding and interpretation of primary and secondary sources
● Interpret charts, graphs, timelines, and data graphics
● Sharpen critical thinking skills through continued reinforcement in each unit of study
● Aspire to become independent, organized, and resourceful learners
